With a reputation for leading the way in handheld marine transceivers, Standard Horizon has once again combined a high level of functionality in a remarkably compact and dependable chassis.
The new HX890E is a high-end 6-Watt floating class H DSC VHF with built-in GPS, and shares the same DSC (Digital Selective Calling) capabilities as the hugely popular HX870E. However, Standard Horizon has added yet more built-in features, including two scrambler systems. These are ideal for flotillas, sea anglers or marine authorities as the 4-code CVS2500A and 32 code FVP-42 scrambler types allow for secure communication between two or more compatible sets. Thanks also to group monitor function, the set itself can track and display the position of up to 9 pre-selected vessels using position calling.
Another new feature is the FM band broadcast receiver, allowing the user to enjoy their favourite FM radio station whilst out on the water. No need to ration the music, either, as the rechargeable 1800mAh Li-ion battery gives 11 hours of operating time and the 700mW speaker provides ample volume over wind, wave or engine noise.
The HX890E will be in its element afloat as the casing – available now in black or navy blue – is built to US military (MIL-STD-810F) specifications. Backed with Standard Horizon’s three-year waterproofing warranty, the set is fully buoyant and can be submerged safely for up to 1.5m for 30 minutes. There is also an automatic water-activated white strobe light fitted to assist in a man overboard situation.
The scrambler and FM band receiver compliment an already feature-packed handheld VHF, which includes a built-in 66 channel WAAS GPS and full class H DSC operation. This provides everything you would expect on a high-end DSC set, including automatic polling, individual or group calling and multi-watch scanning of up to three pre-selected channels.
Access to all this functionality is simple. No need to wade through the manual – just use the new Easy-To-Operate menu system that makes the HX890E the most intuitive on the market.
The oversized (2.3in diagonal) and back lit dot matrix screen is one of the largest found on a handheld VHF radio, and provides a wealth of information, including waypoint and route navigation. The super-bright display can be toggled between day or night operation and clearly shows all the functions selected, from basic VHF operation through to DSC Group Position calls.
Encapsulated in an ergonomic case, complete with a micro USB data jack for PC programming, the new HX890E is supplied with a wide range of accessories including 12V/240V charger, cradle and back-up alkaline battery tray.
The HX890E is a rugged and buoyant DSC handheld radio that will not only allow you to navigate safely and communicate securely, it can also keep tabs on up to nine of your friends. The FM radio can entertain you as you relax, and this remarkable set is now available in two colours.
