Fairline launches apprenticeship programme

Leading British luxury motor yacht manufacturer Fairline launches a new ‘trailblazer apprenticeship’ programme in partnership with Evolve Business Training.  The new scheme will offer 22 people the chance of a career in the £multimillion highly skilled boat building industry.

Supported by the British Marine Federation and the Shipwrights Apprenticeship Scheme, which encourages businesses to train apprentices, Evolve Business Training – the employer focused arm of Tresham College of Further and Higher Education in Northamptonshire – will work closely with Fairline to develop and deliver the apprenticeship training standards and assessments.

The Level 3 Engineering Apprenticeship programme will be tailored to the requirements of the global luxury yachting industry and will be based at Fairline’s Oundle headquarters and at the college’s Corby campus. The apprenticeship scheme will be a four year programme, during which time apprentices will gain invaluable training and experience, and learn and develop the specialist skills and knowledge required in building luxury motor yachts.

Stefan Whitmarsh, Head of Engineering at Fairline, says, “We are excited to be working with the apprentices from Tresham, it’s a unique opportunity for the students to learn a wide variety of trades and specifically, boat building.  The new apprenticeship scheme forms part of the plan to strengthen our business for the future, and it’s a chance for the 22 apprentices to be part of a great British brand that delivers luxury boats to a global audience.”

Rachel Kay, Deputy Principal and MD at Tresham says, “This is an excellent career opportunity for young people, and a chance to get on board with a major global player in the luxury boating market.”

Paul Harris, Administrator of the Shipwright Apprenticeship Scheme, says, “Through discussions between Shipwrights and the British Marine Federation we are meeting with Colleges and local businesses, such as Tresham and Fairline, to secure the return of marine apprenticeships to the region.”

Recruitment of the team of 22 apprenticeships is already underway and the Fairline Boatbuilding / Shipwright Apprenticeship Programme will commence in September 2015.
