The Thermal Dinghy Top from Gill is aimed at winter water users and provides warmth and protection from spray and waves.

My first impression is how comfortable it feels.  It’s micro-fleece lining is plush without being bulky and is almost velvety in appearance.

The wind and waterproof outer is stretchy and, at least in my case, a looser fit allowing for a base layer or two underneath.

The high collar is most welcome out on the water and has an elastic draw cord to allow the opening to be cinched tight to prevent water ingress.  The collar can also be folded over to provide more ventilation and prevent overheating.

The PU cuffs are pliant and comfortable with Velcro tabs to adjust the fit and the waist has a neoprene seal, again with Velcro adjustment.

It’s highly breathable and didn’t get clammy or damp inside even after moderate exertion.  I did wonder how it would cope on warmer days but needn’t have worried as it never felt overly hot.  Ventilation can be adjusted via the cuffs and neck and, by removing a base layer, the dinghy top stayed on all day.

The arms are cut to allow good overhead reach without the top riding up and the soft-shell fabric has an element of stretch to it which avoids constriction during the more gymnastic manoeuvres.

As one would expect from Gill, the quality and attention to detail are excellent, and with a RRP of £99.00 it’s competitively priced.
