Whitehaven Marina has a new Free Flow Flag that will now be used for their large sea lock.
The marina at Whitehaven ran a competition recently for local children between the ages of 7 and 11 to design a Free Flow Flag.
The flag needed to be bright and vibrant so that boats easily spot when Free Flow is in operation and also the general public can cross the lock on foot. Beth Houghton (pictured above), a year six pupil from local Jericho Primary School, was the proud winner of the competition.
Whitehaven Marina on the north west coast of the UK has over 400 fully serviced marina berths and is protected from the Irish Sea by some amazing 265 year old inner and outer breakwaters and the large sea lock that keeps the marina, and in fact the whole town, safe.
Winner of the competition, Beth, was presented with a large printed version of her flag design.
Whitehaven Marina Manager, Simone Morgan, said “We had a fantastic response to the competition and 378 entered from different schools in and around Whitehaven. Beth’s design won because it was clear, bright, easily identifiable and with a nautical theme.”
She added “It’s great to get the local community involved in the marina and the kids have been so interested in how the lock works etc so it’s been really educational for them too.”
The response was so good that the marina have decided to run the competition again next year.
