Last night (Friday 15 September 2017), market leader in the fast growing electric propulsion industry, Torqeedo, was crowned winner of the Sailing Today Green Award at this year’s TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show.
The Award was presented to Torqeedo and rudder manufacturer, Jefa, in partnership with boat builder Hanse Yachts, for its innovative e-motion Rudder Drive.
Featuring Torqeedo’s Cruise 4.0 with folding propeller, the Rudder Drive replaces the diesel engine and its components, as well as the complete sail drive, removing the need for thrusters. It offers outstanding manoeuvrability, thanks to its unique rudder placement of the 4kW, (8 HP equivalent) Torqeedo electric motor, and overal light weight, at 100KG less than the diesel sail drive option.
Torqeedo’s UK Sales Manager, John Arnold, comments on the award win, “We are thrilled to win this award, in partnership with Hanse Yachts and Jefa. This award highlights the true innovation and technical engineering of these three companies.”
Offering speeds of up to 4.5 knots with calm seas, the new Rudder Drive is equipped with four lithium-ion batteries, providing a range of up to 30 nautical miles. The Rudder Drive can also be used with two batteries if a shorter range is required, offering a maximum speed of 6.1 knots – nearing the maximum speed of the diesel version.
The Award was collected by Benjamin Zwerenz from Torqeedo, at TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show, on Friday 15 September 2017.
