Over the Easter weekend the McConaghy built, Ker designed, Black Baza won the China Seas Race on corrected time on IRC Handicap.
The victory came in the early hours of Saturday morning after just over 60 hours of racing. Of the win co-owner Anthony Root said:
“I always thought we had a good shot but I never allowed myself to contemplate the possibility seriously until after the race was over. I had a suspicion that something was up when the Rolex film team came out to meet us at the finish at 2 am”
The “Asia 42” design was launched last year from the McConaghy Zhuhai facility and this race was the third race targeted (and won) by her owners Anthony Root and Steve Manning.
Anthony Root commented, “The boat performed like a dream. The control and speed while power reaching and downhill sledding were awesome. Following the Vietnam and Boracay successes, we really have to acknowledge Jason Ker for an extraordinary design and thank Mark Evans and his team at McConaghy for a terrific build and exceptional continuing support.”
Video coverage of the event via Rolex Spirit of Yachting Series is expected shortly, along with a tour of the McConaghy facility taken in the days prior to the race. Keep an eye out for it on our Facebook site, and like https://www.facebook.com/McConaghyBoats/
The China Sea Race is a 565nm Category 1 Offshore Race run under the auspices of RORC, and takes competitors from Hong Kong, China to Subic Bay in the Philippines.
